New Year’s Resolutions: To Write or To Not Bother…

Ah, a new year! It’s like cleaning the blackboard of your life and starting over with a new, shiny, clean and unblemished slate.

I used to love writing New Year’s resolutions – still do (I love the excitement of a new year). I’d get out a clean, unwrinkled piece of paper and my favorite felt tip pens and go to town. Those pages were works of art but the resolutions never stuck. They were grand. And completely unattainable. Thankfully, since then, I’ve learned a little bit about goals and resolutions. Now I try to write SMART goals and resolutions:

S – Specific

M – Measurable

A – Achievable

R – Realistic

T – Timed

So, this year instead of saying, “I’ll publish my first book!” I’ll break it down. What needs to be done before I can do that? How long, realistically, is it going to take me to get all of those things done? What has to be done first, second, third? It’s a long process, but it’s also a great time to look at what I accomplished in 2011 and what I could have improved on.

Do you write New Year’s resolutions? What do you want to work on in 2012? And what did you accomplish in 2011?

Happy New Year! I’m off to dig out my felt tips. :0)

Ashley March Interview

I’m so excited to chat with today’s guest here at Armchair Heroines! Please give a big e-welcome to Ashley March. *a deafening roar of clapping and whistling ensues*

First off, tell us about Romancing the Countess and where we can get a copy!

Thanks so much for having me today, Tiffany! =) Here’s the official blurb for the book:

Sebastian Madinger, the Earl of Wriothesly, thought he’d married the perfect woman-until a fatal accident revealed her betrayal with his best friend. After their deaths, Sebastian is determined to avoid a scandal for the sake of his son. But his best friend’s widow is just as determined to cast her mourning veil aside by hosting a party that will surely destroy both their reputations and expose all of his carefully kept secrets…

Leah George has carried the painful knowledge of her husband’s affair for almost a year. All she wants now is to enjoy her independence and make a new life for herself-even if that means being ostracized by the Society whose rules she was raised to obey. Now that the rumors are flying, there’s only one thing left for Sebastian to do: silence the scandal by enticing the improper widow into becoming a proper wife. But when it comes to matters of the heart, neither Sebastian nor Leah is prepared for the passion they discover in each other’s arms….

ROMANCING THE COUNTESS is available at all major booksellers, both in print and online.

P.S. I read this book a couple weeks ago – in two nights! It would have been one, but I turn into a raging…well, you know… if I don’t sleep. So I forced myself to put it down. Romancing the Countess is a beautifully written, engaging book full of flawed, lovable characters struggling to deal with grief, expectations and burgeoning feelings. I love Ashley’s writing style! It’s poetic without being heavy-handed. The book has a smooth flow which kept me turning pages. I can’t wait for her next book to come out!

Next question: Were there aspects of the book with which you struggled (particular scenes, characters, research)? On the flip side, were there aspects that came easily?

I think the most difficult part of the book were the first few chapters. Going in, I knew that this wasn’t going to be your typical romance. Because their spouses had just died, they couldn’t be immediately attracted to one another (not even secretly). But because it is a romance novel, I had to show their developing romantic relationship. As a result, I had to make sure I balanced their emotions and actions following their spouses’ deaths with the growing awareness they had of one another. It was a delicate balance, but I’m thrilled to say that I’m pleased with how the final version came out.

I think you did a wonderful job with this. I think that’s one of the reasons I liked it so much. It felt very real and grounded to me.

Once I had those first few chapters down, the sexual tension between the two came very easily. I loved how they not only struggled to hide their attraction from each other, but also from themselves. I had a fellow author who read it and said that the sexual tension leaps off the page, which made me smile, because it was really fun to see the two of them interact with these undercurrents.

Uh, yeah, I totally agree with that fellow author! What is your writing day like? Do you have any rituals you do before you sit down to write?

I’m actually working on changing my writing day. It seems like since my first book came out in October of last year I’ve been going a mile a minute without ever having time to breathe. And while I have fun, this hasn’t exactly been good for my health. So I’m making some changes to allow me to 1) write more (oddly enough, the business side of writing was getting in the way of this) and 2) read more (I could sob when I think of the few number of books I’ve read this year, although most of the ones I did read were fabulous). So I’m kind of in a transition stage right now with my writing day. =)

As for rituals, as long as I have water, coffee, and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on hand, I’m usually good to go. I do most of my writing on my laptop on the couch, my legs propped up on the ottoman. And since I write most at night…yes, I do wear my pajamas. ;)

Hmm, interesting. I’m a fan of coffee and PB&Js. How has your attitude about writing and being published changed over the past few years?

I only began writing seriously in 2008, but in three years there’s been a huge shift in the power that both writers and readers now have in the publishing world. I’m happy to see that traditional publishing is still here, but with self-publishing writers have the option of taking more control of what they want to write and at what price they want to sell the book. However, I doubt so much change would have taken place if not for readers, who have opened these gates by reading on e-readers and showing that they don’t care too much who the publisher is, as long as they find a book they love.

As a writer who wants to explore all of the ideas in my head, I’m very grateful to readers for making this possible.

I love that authors and readers have more of a say in what they write (and all that goes into it) and what they read. On your bookshelf: Is there a book or author you keep returning to? Why?

I have a HUGE TBR pile. And I mean, HUUUGE. (Thus the sobs earlier because I haven’t had the time to read very much.) But when I do get time to read, and if I choose to re-read a book instead of reading something new, I usually find myself going to my comfort authors: Lisa Kleypas, Teresa Medeiros, Laura Lee Gurhke, Julia Quinn. I also recently read WHAT I DID FOR A DUKE by Julie Anne Long, and it was the first book I’ve ever read where as soon as I finished I wanted to start it again.

Adding Julie Anne Long to my list. Right. Now. Of course, the quintessential quartet have places of honor on my keeper shelf! And here are a couple questions just for fun:

One thing you are never without…

Lip gloss or chapstick (preferably lip gloss). As a mom of two young children I’m not very high maintenance, but I hate the feeling when my lips are dry.

Me, too. I’m a big fan of Lipsmackers. I get a jumbo package every year in my stocking :0) And speaking of holidays, if you could create a new holiday what holiday would you create and what would you celebrate?

Oooh, love this question. =) Because I’m a writer, books and reading are tremendously important in my life (and my family loves reading, too). I would want to create Booksies (perhaps a different name would be better ;) , and it would celebrate books. People would take off the day from work and school and everyone would read—and that’s it. I would also like to have vacation packages for the Booksies holiday where people can go to a resort designed for readers. Sitting on a beach reading a romance novel? Yes, thank you. =)

Oh, I am so celebrating Booksies. Just tell me when and where those resorts are! If Romancing the Countess had a soundtrack what songs would be on it?

Just off the top of my head, songs that I’d love for this book:

Lady in Red by Chris de Burgh (not because she wears a red dress, but because the hero suddenly sees her in a new light)

Wild Thing by Jimi Hendrix (I imagine Sebastian could hear this in his head whenever Leah does something he deems “reckless”)

*snorting with laughter at that incongruous and incredibly entertaining image…and it’s not just because Sebastian is a hottie!

Take My Breath Away by Berlin (to me, a song about finding the unexpected and falling in love)

Miss Independent by Kelly Clarkson (because Leah wants to be independent and struggles with reconciling independence and falling in love with Sebastian)

Nice list off the top of your head! Perfect for the book, IMHO.

RomCon 2011 Wrap-Up

Okay, so it’s been seventeen days since RomCon took place. I’m a little behind. Let’s just say it’s taken me this long to fully recover from the wild, raucous hilarity. And now I’ve got pics, quips and tips.

I attended RomCon11 as a reader. I’m hoping, in the future, to attend as an author.

TIP: If you’re an author or aspiring author, attend once with few event obligations. That way you can take it all in, make notes of what you’d like to do when you attend as an author, things you might do differently, network with readers and authors, etc.

I also volunteered for RomCon11. I was lucky enough to arrive early (on Thursday) in order to help stuff goody bags, meet new peeps and get the general lay of the land.

TIP: Volunteer! And arrive early if you can. It’s a great way to find friends (if you’re traveling alone), get your hands on the program, finalize your schedule and figure out where all of your must-attend events will be held. Plus you might just get some face time with your fave authors.

Thursday evening I was thrilled to be invited to dinner with The Book Reading Gals. What a great night! I sat next to Robyn Carr *squee* (we had a wonderful chat about writing, the publishing industry and our families), the gals of “The Pervy Trinity”: Jamie Lynn of For the Love of Romance and The Season for Romance, Rita of Not Another Romance Blog and Kati of Romancing Rakes (I cracked up the whole meal thanks to these three and the hilarious Jenn LeBlanc. Check out the Trinity’s newest endeavor, Romance Lately) and another lovely volunteer, and my partner in crime for a good part of the weekend, Janon.

Just around the table corner from us was an amazing gathering of authors: Carly Phillips, Delilah Marvelle, Erin Kellison, Erin Quinn, Gabi Stevens, Isobel Carr, Janelle Denison, Jenn LeBlanc, Jessa Slade, Melissa Mayhue, Shayla Black, Sophie Oak, and Sylvia Day.

* From the left and around the horn: Rita, Jamie Lynn, Janon, Robyn Carr, Yours Truly and Kati

* Thanks to Rita for this pic!

That night, after dinner, I spent some quality time in my hotel room finishing my contemporary novella, The   Sweetest Revenge, which will be included in the Sweet Talk Me anthology along with novellas by Ashley March and Bernadette Marie!

TIP: Attend the RomCon Buddies Meetup! I didn’t and wish I had. The attendees were put into groups along with an author. Just another way to meet new peeps, make friends and guarantee you’ll see familiar faces throughout the weekend.

Friday morning came bright and early as I woke up at 5:30 a.m. for some inexplicable reason. I worked for awhile, grabbed some breakfast then headed downstairs, ready for a day packed with fun and events.

TIP: If you have wheels at RomCon or a friend there with wheels, pick up a few groceries. I brought a little cooler with fruit, yogurt, granola bars, juice, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, string cheese and my fave creamer for my coffee (trust me, that is a must-have item). I saved a little money (although, truth be told, I probably missed a few mingling sessions) and avoided some frustration (the restaurant was hopping).

Friday I attended:

  • Carly Phillips’ Intimate Chat – Great fun! Carly answered questions, talked about her new series and gave out sweet swag.
  • The Contemporary Author Panel – It was packed with great authors, fun stories, Q & A’s and more swag.
  • Abby Gaines’s Intimate Chat – Abby is hilarious! Her tagline is “stories that leave you smiling”. It’s appropriate for the author, too.
  • The Historical Readers Tea – Despite the fact that the tea arrived about fifteen minutes late, I thoroughly enjoyed this event and appreciated the authors who handled the slight setback with aplomb. A special thanks to the authors and publishers – I left this event with eight books balanced on my arms!
  • Wild West Night – I almost rode the mechanical bull thanks to peer pressure, and I got a great picture with Melissa Mayhue and The Book Reading Gals.

From left: Your Truly, Heather, Melanie, Melissa Mayhue

Then came Chocolate Mangasm…what a riot! We played Pass the *ahem* with Delilah Marvelle and Kati (and her riding crop) watching over us. Then it was off to complete a suggestive word scramble with Melissa Schroeder. Next we pinned various items on various parts of the men (posters) from Olivia Cunning’s Sinners on Tour books. We finished the night with dirty Mad Libs with Jory Strong. Heather and I also had time to sneak in another picture…

I also scored this super-cool swag item. Thank you, Olivia:

Needless to say, I collapsed into bed…then woke up the next morning at 4:30 a.m. I should have slept until like 9 a.m….

TIP: Pack Visine! I didn’t get a lot of sleep. By Saturday a.m. my eyes were bloodshot and puffy. It looked like I’d been on a two day bender.

Saturday I:

  • Janon and I assisted Robyn Carr with her Small-Townville Jeopardy-style game. So fun!
  • Hung out with the Contemporary Authors – again – at the Contemporary Reader/Author Mixer. Love those chicks!
  • Helped out with the Historical Reader/Author Mixer
  • Went to Julie James’ Intimate Chat – So great to hang out with her, and we got books!
  • Partied at the Fab Five Cocktail Hour with Erin Quinn, Sylvia Day, Erin Kellison, and Shayla Black where I scored another piece of super-cool swag. Thank you, Erin!

  • Enjoyed the Supernatural Supper.
  • Helped out at Melissa Mayhue’s Blogger & Reviewer Party.
  • Hit the hay. Thankfully, I slept in a little!

My fab weekend concluded on Sunday with:

  • The Birds of a Feather Reader Discussion with Heather and Melanie, The Book Reading Gals. It was a great discussion about favorite books and authors, suggestions re: “if you like ____, you might also like ____”, discussion about the future of books and the industry. Great giveaways in this event!!
  • The Readers Crown Awards Brunch. Congrats to all of the finalists and winners!
  • The RomCon Rumble – a crazy and fun scramble for trading cards and autographs. I didn’t get all of the cards, but I didn’t laze about either:

The books I brought home…

More great swag!

I had an amazing time at RomCon11! I’m already counting down for RomCon12! See YOU there…

FINAL TIP: Save room in your suitcase or just bring an extra one for all of the sweet swag you’ll be taking home!

Most People Don’t Know Monday

Most people don’t know that I have a very favorite armchair in which to cuddle up and read. It’s also where I pile the books I’m reading and those that are up next. Here’s a picture for your viewing pleasure:

Alas, I’m afraid I’m going to have to say good-bye to it and its soft, richly colored fabric one day very soon…

Top Ten Reasons I Love RomCon

This Friday the fun starts at RomCon, a romance and women’s fiction convention. For those of us who are volunteering, the fun starts tomorrow.

In celebration of one of my favorite events of the year, here are my top ten reasons I love RomCon:

10. The Pre-Convention Excitement – I’ve been anticipating this for months!

9.    The Post-Convention Glow – I’ll still be excited for months to come!

8.    The  Readers Crown – The contest where readers get to have their say.

7.    The Sessions – These aren’t your corporate sessions, peeps. Buckle up! It’s going to be a raucous ride (as in: wild, crazy and FUN)!

6.    The Laughter – Don’t do your crunches this week…your stomach will be sore when the weekend is through.

5.    The Special Events – Build-A-Hero, Special Ops Track (a whole track!), Monsters & More Seme-Charades, Intimate Chats, Author Panels, Author-Hosted Teas, Luau, Wild    West Dinner, Chocolate Mangasm, Smalltown-ville, Victorian Fashion Show, Caught Dead Game…I could fill an entire blog post with Special Events. Be there or…

4.    The Late Nights – Yeah, don’t plan on getting much sleep. You won’t.

3.    The Goody Room – Packed with bookmarks, postcards, excerpt booklets, a plethora of creative and unique swag, and books. My heart flutters at the thought!

2.    The Authors – Need I say more?

1.    The Readers ( aka New-found Friends) – The most amazingly fun, enthusiastic, and of course, well-read group around!

So, bring on the Con! See you there…

Teasers on Tuesday

I love to read, and long before I was a writer, I was a reader. I still read as much as I can – although time isn’t quite as available as it used to be…not that I’m complaining or anything!

One way I like to celebrate my love of reading is to share teasers.

Want to join in the fun?

Simply pick a random page in your current read then pick a random line. Post the title, author and teaser in the comments section below. You can also leave the page number, just for fun.

Ready? Set. Tease!

Tiffany’s Teaser:

Leave No Trace, a novella by Cindy Gerard in the anthology Deadly Promises

From page 139:  So why did a knot of anxiety tighten inside his chest like a fist?

Leaves you with a few questions, doesn’t it? You want to run out to the library or bookstore and pick it up, don’t you?
